A friend of mine who is well acquainted with the Union Pacific brought up cab control signal (CCS) implications. This train would have needed UP style CCS from Grand Island to North Platte on the UP.
I have never known the Q to employ ACS in locations other than those mentioned. As an aside, the UP cab sigmals were compatible with the CB&Q system so, when running with a UP engine in the lead and

Thanks, Leo, that certainly does open the blinds, so to speak. :) I enjoy hearing these stories about how things were and have even re-related them a few times. I think another eye-opener was the sto
Let me try and shed some insider details. We never called it fire insurance, it was job insurance. You could get it through BRCF or the UTU. What did it insure ? Working on any RR,not just the Q,was
Leo, random tests? I wonder, too. It was no secret about how some people left Savanna eastbound. I think it was all an early version of "don't ask, don't tell" and get the train over the road. I thin
Leo, rumor had it that there were "unoffical official" observations going on daily - that some regular passengers had been recruited to routinely watch. As usual Pete has done a pretty complete job

Rupert, That's one loaded question ! I kind of anticipated it and therefore have been thinking about it off and on all day. I believe the Aurora Div,Savanna pool was unique to the entire Q system in
Does anyone have a photo of the Aurora depot (the now-abandoned one on South Broadway)? I am looking for one that has the depot, tower, platforms with covers - ideally with a train or two. Also, idea
I guess that was Casey's idea - being home every way. But that commute! (He originally did all his commuting via passenger trains on Q, MR, IC, etc. But the best laid plans.....) Doug, First I'm
Leo, I don't remember a lot of the agreement details, but I know I caught the CZ off the Aurora passenger extra list and worked CUS-Burlington-CUS. Why wouldn't that vacancy have been protected out o
(wish I had the book to compare your notes to) My big (long winded coming) point on the subject of rules, investigations, etc. is that, basically, train crews were set up for failure with the company
Doug, By the time you and I filled mainline passenger vacancies in the 70's all that was left was 5/6 and 347/348. As I recall on 5/6 there were 2 turns and one flagman(Tinie Biere) and one brakeman
Doug, As far as hogger training you're describing the mid to late 70s. Prior to that a review of engineers seniority lists shows just the opposite. A guy could spend a decade or two as a fireman bef
Kaiser willieii0815, As far as I know anyone can post to this list and should be welcome. The comment I made about the RRs becoming more militaristic dealt with a comparison of what I have been told
Given the character of the characters that work on and those of us that appreciate them and the railroads they work on, I doubt that the term “militaristic” was intended to be a negative.
So...I'm dragging my poor wife on a little excursion to Savanna today. She gets to geocache while I photograph trains. After all the lovely recent descriptions of the place, I'm almost afraid to ask
In all it's splendor the Radke still exists ! To those in the know is my memory short circuiting ? Wasn't the brick painted white back in the day ? Leo Phillipp __._,_.___ Change settings via the We
