Johnathan,
To the best of my knowledge, upon the 1948 breakup of Pullman, the Burlington
immediately leased the cars back to Pullman for operation. All of the
pictures I have seen of cars still in Pullman lease have "PULLMAN" on the
letterboard in Railroad Roman and the car name underneath. The Q did not have
them
relettered "Burlington". There is no indication that the car is owned by the Q
and no numbering on the car. Once the cars left Pullman lease, I have seen
pictures where the letterboard is painted over (blank) and where the name was,
is
the lettering CB&Q and the car number.
I am looking at a picture in October 1965 of the New Capitol - a 14 section
sleeper that was still in Pullman lease. It is painted in Pullman green with
a black roof and underbody. It has a dulux gold "PULLMAN" on the letterboard
in Railroad Roman with the name "NEW CAPITOL" also in RR Roman. Of interest,
the cars on either side of it - a NYC and Southern car have the owning
railroads' name on the letterboard with "PULLMAN" in small letters on each end
of the
cars.
In the early 50's several heavyweight cars were painted silver with SSS
(simulated stainless steel - i.e. shadow striping) paint for protection of the
DZ.
In this case the "PULLMAN" was in Zephyr typeface and was black. Some of
these cars eventually had their letterboards painted over as well.
Johnathan - in your case (mid '40's) all letterboards should be "Pullman"
with the car name in what some people call "bronze gold" (like gold leaf). I
have seen drawings that show that Pullman used this color until 1952 before
changing to dulux gold (yellowish-gold). Note:the 1952 date is open to some
debate. The paint should all be Pullman green with black roofs and
underbodies.
The only advantage of using the Branchline "Q" lettered cars would be you would
get the car names done already. I don't know if Branchline intends to use the
bronze gold lettering or the dulux.
Finding RR Roman "PULLMAN" decals in bronze gold is not hard. Finding the
car names is. I had to piece together the name "CORNHUSKER" (a 12-1 sleeper -
what a great name!) on one of my Q sleepers.
Also of note - the earliest use of the "Ribbonrail" lettering I have ever
seen was in 1949 on the rebuilt suburban coaches. There may have been an
earlier
use, but this is the earliest I have ever seen. The RR Roman lasted well
into the fifites on many cars.
All of this is coming from memory, there may be a few goofs - feel free to
jump in if I have it wrong!
Rich
