Hol,
I have all of Bill's books, but the photo album cuts of in the late 1930s,
and I've had trouble finding photos of heavyweights in the late 1940s and
early 1950s. BB#42 has been the best source, but most of the photos except
in the equipment chapter are three quarter views of trains featuring the
locomotive, and the car data isn't usually visible. It sounds like the best
plan is to use the Pullman lettered sleepers and reletter the chair cars
with CB&Q and the car number.
Your list below confirms what I've found, and I've already built the
Branchline kits for New Capitol and New Omaha. I have three 12-1 kits, and I
plan to letter them for Cornhusker, Davenport, and either Estes Park or
Pepin. I haven't decided how to letter my 8-1-2 kits. I'm planning to order
a couple of 10-1-1s and one each 12-2 and 6-6 from NKP along with some
baggage and chair cars. I don't know of any 8-5 or 8-3-1 kits or sides, but
I'd like to do a Clover series car and Zephyr Tower. The other gap I have is
Q dining cars, and I may have to scratchbuild those. The fleet is planned to
include about 20 heavyweight cars. Now if I can find a couple of S-4s....

Nelson:
No list, only personal observations. Following are cars I saw or
photographed in the early 19560s still with full Pullman lettering (in
Dulux -- imitation gold -- Railroad Romasn, as Rich advised) and
carrying their car names and no indication of Burlington ownership:
New Capitol (14 section)
Cornhusker, Estes Park (12-1)
Creighton University, Princeton Universtiy (12-2)
The above were, of course, in Pullman green paint. In addition, the
following rebuilt betterment cars (semi-streamlined for Zephyr service)
were still in use in their Pullman light gray paint and with Zephyr
Gothic lettering in black:
Denver Tower, Zephyr Tower (8-1-3)
Additionally, I have photos of may other heavyweight Pullmans in both
green and gray with blank letterboards and only the CB&Q reporting marks
and 600-series car numbers centered in two lines where the car name
previously appeared. Many of these photos appeared in Bill Glick's
volume on Q passenger cars, still available direct from Bill.
Hope this helps some.

Hol,
Thanks for the information. Is there a list anywhere of the Pullman cars
that weren't relettered? Also, is there a list of Pullman car names that
were relettered that cross-indexes the Pullman name and the new CB&Q number?
I have several painted but unlettered Branchline passenger cars that I would
like to turn into prototype models circa 1950.

The heavyweight sleepers acquired by the Q in 1948 did not carry both their
CB&Q numbers and their Pullman names at the same time. Those that got the Q
numbers generally simply had Pullman painted out on the letterboard and CB&Q
6XX painted in two lines in place of the car name, centered beneath the
windows. A good many of the cars, however, were never relettered and after
years of service on the Q, first in Pullman lease and later as dorm cars and
emergency coaches, went to scrap still lettered Pullman and carrying their
Pullman car names.

Did the Q retain Pullman car names when they relettered heavyweights from
Pullman to Burlington? The books I have access to list both car names and
car numbers, but were both names and numbers used on sleepers in the late
1940s and early 1950s?
