Glen,
Some additional info. I talked to my CGW friend. He gave me some
contacts with the timetables and I plan to get in contact with them to
see if I can get a date. My CGW friend said Stillings Junction existed
because the CGW used to change steam engines there. The CGW would run
their big Texas class engines south to there, and then the train would
be split with two smaller engines each taking a train to Kansas City.
The curve off the Leavenworth bridge was very tight on the west side
where the CGW started using trackage rights over the MP to Kansas City.
He said you can still find the foundations of the engine house today if
you know where to look where Stillings Junction was.
I'm also wondering if the drop off in the Leavenworth-East Leavenworth
train shuttle corresponded with the MP Missouri River Eagle starting in
1940. Leavenworth then had a direct streamlined train to/from Kansas
City and Omaha and the resulting traffic drop off on the Q side made it
more economical for the Q to switch to a bus. The train
connection/shuttle from Atchison to Armour lasted at least another 10
years into the early 50's which would suggest the traffic impact of the
Eagle at Atchison was less.
