I did forget to mention that if a "non" CZ car was in the consist, such as a
Rio Grande Coach from the Prospector, or an odd Pullman, the coach or coaches
were placed behind the baggage car and an odd Pullman was placed in front of
the Observation car.
Over the years many odd Pullmans showed up in the CZ. I've seen shots of GN,
PRR, C&O, IC, NYC, L&N, UP, and SP. I'm sure there were others. In the C&O
Equipment Book the shots of C&O 10/6 Pullmans were taken while in the CZ
Consist.
Another interesting shot that showed up, an ACL Combine, which came up from
TN, is shown in front of a CZ Baggage car. This combine would be dropped at
Burlington IA. The combine usually went west in the Nebraska Zephyr, why it's
in
the CZ consist? The only reason I can think of is the car was late getting
into Chicago on the C&EI, the Burlington didn't hold the westbound NZ, and put
the car in the next westbound train, the CZ.
Mike Spoor once told me that in his wonderful color books on the Burlington,
he liked to show odd Pullmans running in the CZ consist. Thanks Mike! Because
I like to run odd Pullmans in my CZ.
