I have only seen evidence of  freight Geeps running, usually as trailing units.  The time frame was the 1960s when other mail or express runs had been terminated and LCL and occasionally Packing House Products (PHP) were added to the one time mail trains.  Trains left Denver, as far as my research has indicated, as strictly mail and express consists.  Additional express and PHP were added at Lincoln and Omaha late in the afternoon and early evening. The run to Chicago was made in darkness unless some enroute delays caused an early daylight arrival at Cicero where the PHP and additional units would be switched out prior to the last leg to CUS.  If someone has east end dispatcher sheets from that era, perhaps a written record may verify if F-units ever made it into the consists.  Jim Sandrin

Jim, what years did the mixed Es and Fs run together? My guess would be in the late 1950s and the 1960 into the BN merger.

Not all trains were Zephyrs lead by Silver E units. Enclosed is a mail extra lead by SD9s.  Some of Mike Spoors' books have shots of the Galesburg local lead by GP7s in both red and black schemes. Although it usually ran at night, Mail train 14 frequently ran with a mix of E-units and freight power. Just Saying!  Jim Sandrin

Bill,

Also known as #15.

The switch in the picture reminded me of how very important it became for a couple days in 1947. The whole story is in a BRHS Bulletin scheduled for later 2021.

Scott,

I grew up and lived in Downers Grove until I left for college. I agree that most passenger trains in the Chicago area were powered with E units, but there were a few exceptions. Attached is a photo that I took of a GP7 pulling the westbound Galesburg local going through Downers Grove. Elsewhere on the system's secondary lines, locomotives other than E units were found on some passenger trains. All of the Q’s GP7s (and possibly the GP9s) had steam generators as did some SD7/9. Then, of course, the original California Zephyrs were powered by three unit F3s, nos. 9960ABC - 9962ABC. After being replaced on the CZ by E units in the early 1950s, the passenger F3s were used on the new Kansas City Zephyr for a while before being reassigned to freight service in the mid 1950s.
