Just for fun, I looked in my copy of the 1951 Burlington Lines Rule Book, a souvenir of my time at the CRRM in the '60's. As Bill questioned, the book was used by the Q/C&S/FW&D and the Wichita Valley Railway Company. My copy originally belonged to a fellow named P. B. Laird, who hired out as a Switchman in Jan. 1945. According to his note in the book, he worked in Rock Island, Ill. and Denver. Anyway...there was no mention of the use of the oscillating white headlight, except in Rule 102, which said that the white light was automatically extinguished when the red light came on during an Emergency Brake Application. Apparently, it was also possible to display the red light, and extinguish the white light manually, in case of any occasion where the train was stopped because of a non-Emergency brake application, but might be fouling another track.
