This is just anecdotal and others may have more information.

There were times in the 60's when I was waiting at the Western Springs station for a dinkie to take me to downtown Chicago, I'd see a Zephyr coming from the west on the center track. The Mars light was on the whole time as it passed Hinsdale and Highlands and then zoomed past me to stop at La Grange Road.

There were other times at night when I happened to be near the tracks and I could see the oscillating light from a Zephyr. It did not seem to be only at grade crossings.

The locomotives were always E-7's, E-8's or E-9's. If an SD-9 ever led a Zephyr on the triple track, I never saw it.
