The Kansas City Zephyr and the Nebraska Zephyr were combined
starting starting October 28, 1962 according to John Strauss Jr.'s
Burlington Route Passenger Trains Volume 3. The train also picked
head end cars from the discontinued Coloradan. There were 4-5 E
units on the head end. They were split in Galesburg. This made for
some monster (at least 20 car) consists leaving Union Station.
From the same reference:
On September 13, 1960, the westbound Afternoon Twin Cities Zephyr
and Empire Builder were combined during the winter season. The
eastbound Empire Builder and North Coast Limited were also
combined during the winter season.
On October 30, 1966, the Empire Builder and North Coast Limited
were combined. An August 1967 consist show 5 E units in the lead
with 26 cars. The Morning and Afternoon Twin Cities Zephyrs became
separate again. By October 1967, they were permanently combined
with the Empire Builder and the North Coast Limited.

"...combining Zephyrs out of Chicago..."
That sounds interesting. Which trains were those, and where
did they split?
That Menk thing. It's been noted by others. I'd surely like
to see documentation on this.
