Ed,

I think it was a proactive better-safe-than-sorry approach to operations on the Santa Fe.  I can’t comment as to why NP and others chose to operate with a single cab forward but I’m sure there was a reason.  Sure it looks better but no matter how good your maintenance program is there is always a chance of failure.

Tom,

I'm not a follower of Santa Fe locomotive practice.

But on the NP there was a similar setup:  You could see the North Coast Limited being hauled by an AABA set.  The front two A's were both cab forward, while the last a was cab rear.

But the reason they did that was not fear of unit failure, as it might be suggest by our discussion.  The front A was added on the normal consist to get over steep grades.   It was essentially a front-end helper.

I can't dispute what your source said about the Santa Fe.  It's hard to believe, but perhaps they also had poor maintenance and had too many unit failures on their trains.
