I have heard two reasons for running “elephant style” neither having to do with 
fuel economy.

First was when they started combining Zephyrs out of Chicago they would run 
units cab forward so that when they split the trains later the engines were  
facing forward and didn’t need turning.

Second was when Menk took over he ordered it so that the engines would need to 
be turned thus raising the cost and proving that passenger business didn’t pay.

I have no idea if either is true.
