I don't know if EMD generated their own power.
The IHB/B&OCT "corridor" had Commonwealth Edison lines down it IIRC and
Reynolds Aluminun (or was it Alcoa??) had a plant north and east of EMD in
Lyons (served by the Lyons Belt)
but I don't know if they did any smelting of aluminum or if they just did
rolling work there, so don't know if the electrical power in the area was
sufficient for heavy industry. Likely that EMD \
used the power plant to generate steam for heating the complex as prewar I
don't think gas was widely available in the boonies and efficient gas fired
unit heaters had not been developed for
such applications.
