RE: Train register checking. I believe, if memory serves correctly, that the rules specifically forbade checking the train register against an extra train unless authorized to do so by the dispatcher

Depends on how good the Q traffic solicitor was. Think about the MN&S..there was no logical reason for traffic from the Pacific NW to move via that line, yet they seemed to be involved in every move.
