Hello, I believe the spacer cars were required because of the locomotive coupler alignment systems, not allowing them to be coupled to each other, when in tow, for backup moves. Bill Barber would know more about that subject. No weight restrictions on the mainline bridges. Ted Schnepf

I know in one rulebook ( from the Frisco) that I have in my collection states locomotives dead in tow are to be separated from live locomotives and each other by one car.
