The as delivered E units had a single bulb with a large mirror reflector on a double gimble frame operated by a 2 for 1 mechanism which created the figure eight motion. The red mars signal was a flip up lens that covered the the upper signal when in emergency. The headlight was the same single bulb and reflecter with a fixed mount. Later both units were replaced with twin beam units (white over red in the mars and twin beams "vertical" headlight) which was an increased safety feature in case one sealed beam would burn out. Several roads actually had three bulbs in the signal unit, two horizontal and a single red bulb below the two.
