List,

Thanks for the responses to my questions.  That clears up the headlight question for me (1950.)  On the Mars light, a careful look at the as delivered motors in Bulletin 57 (with an optivisor) does not appear to me to have the two bulb fixture with the white and red bulbs, like below.  It appears to be a larger bulb that would rotate for the oscillating effect.  Is that correct?  Was the picture below and the one Bill posted a later modification?

Thanks,

Rich G

Rich,

You are correct. The E5s, E7s and at least the early E8s (if not all) were delivered with single headlight fixtures. These were changed to dual sealed beam headlight assemblies in the late 50s/early 60s, roughly around the same time as the nose stripes changing from black to red. There has been speculation that both changes may have occurred at the same time. The dual sealed beam headlights were two bulbs stacked vertically (although some RRs installed them horizontally). The entire assembly moved for the Mars light. Bulbs I believe were white with a red lens over the bottom of the two lights in the Mars assembly.

In my Es, I've been using etched detail parts from KV Models. These fit into the opening in the shell/door in front of the bulbs. I use Microscale Micro Krystal Kleer to make a lens over the bottom Mars light and then paint it red. While this doesn't make the red light usable, it still looks right and the paint blocks the light so it looks prototypical when using the Mars light. I've attached a few photos showing this on one of my Proto E9s.

Hope this helps!
