Bob - Evidently, NWS&W purchased all 10 of the Class G-5 0-6-0's, but only put three back into service to switch the steel mill in Sterling, IL. The remaining seven were all scrapped. These 0-6-0's replaced several worn out ex-C&NW 0-6-0's. The Class G-5's then were later replaced by the ex-GTW 0-8-0's that some of us witnessed in service during the mid-to-late 1960s.
There was one other Q steam locomotive that was sold to NWS&W for scrap, but was also used briefly as a switch engine. Reportedly, a single unknown Class O-1-A 2-8-2 in operating condition had its pony and trailing trucks removed and turned into an 0-8-0. This experiment was not successful as the switcher turned out to be prone to derailing and it was later scrapped.
NWS&W also used several Class M-4-A 2-10-4's and a single Class O-1-A 2-8-2 as stationary boilers to supply peak demand steam to the steel mill. There are images of the 2-10-4's in the BRHS Flickr Gallery. Over time as the Q cleaned out their Galesburg, IL, deadline, all the condemned locomotives there made their final trip to Sterling cut into the local freight - Louis
