Lyle,

The couplers mount to the shells, not the frame, and there are mounting pads on the insides of the shells for the couplers.

Only the 'B' unit has I-beams under the floor and if I remember correctly (8 years ago!) I used a Dremel tool to grind away as much solder as I could and then used heat to release the beams.

There really isn't a truck mount on the Hallmark frame- only a hole for the original truck screw. I just elongated the hole towards the center of the frame so the home-made bolster pin was properly located for the Proto truck. If you measure the distance from the mounting hole to the center axle on the Hallmark truck, that gives you an idea on how far you have to elongate it. Once you have the hole relocated you can measure where to make the curved slot for the truck leads and how much to grind away on the frame ends for the gear towers  to properly swivel. As I said before- this conversion was pretty much fly-by-night and involved a lot of file & fit, file & fit until I made the idea work!

John, thanks for the images. Your method is making me reconsider what I thought I was going to do. A couple of things tho'.  I don't recognize how you mounted the couplers and their mounts. It appears you maintained the original mounts but how you attached them to either the shell or the frame is not apparent to me. Are they still on the short piece of the frame that you removed from each end? Also, just to confirm, the I-beam appears to be originally mounted by two solder points each. Did you remove them by using heat or can they be pried away? I suspect the former. The original truck mount, did you remove it before opening the floor or were you able to remove it piece of the floor you cut away?

Again, thanks for the images, they will be of great assistance
