A pesky issue converting the Hallmark E5s to new power is conserving the
matching distinctive plated fluted skirting soldered to the OEM brass flooring,
an issue that prevented from doing much earlier conversions on this growler
and its consort. By using the original flooring for the A, I dodged the issue,
but I could not on the B where I used the substitute cast zamac floor.
Presuming that unsoldering the skirts would probably destroy the plating (to be
remedied somewhat with Alclad), but having no alternative, I successfully
removed the skirts with a hot iron and a lot of heat sinks- with all plating
remaining….intact! The skirts were then reapplied to the OMI floor.
I LOL at the report of a new-in-box OMI E unit OMI zamac floor being found in
three pieces. Feel good; that was one of the better ones!
I love these E5’s. For years, I stood trackside countless times to watch these
locomotives westbound rise up through the Berwyn gantries to hurtle through
Riverside with the Expo Flyer at full track speed, attempting to match the
Milwaukee’s new Midwest Hiawatha’s mid day dash to Omaha. The only thing
better was when the Expo had double-shotted 4-6-4s instead (only once did I see
that, but it was worth a hundred other sightings).
