John-

The answers to your questions were covered in detail in the recent BURLINGTON BULLETIN on E5s.

I believe Jeff Wilson formerly of Model Railroader magazine was the first to tie the Phase I to E3 and Phase II to E6 production which makes sense.   E3s had the radiator “ribs” perpendicular to the long axis of the unit and E6s were parallel as were later E7s (except for Phase II E7s which had chicken wire!!).

At the time of publication of the Bulletin the exact nature of the roof grilles on the B units was not known as no good roof shots had surfaced, but since then photos have appeared (invariably!!!) on eBay that show the E5B grilles to be punched louver panels running perpendicular to the long axis of the unit.  It appears the open side of the punched louvers were orientated to the end of the unit they were closer to.

The BULLETIN also has scale drawings of the different units which should be of assistance in doing your conversion.

I am planning on converting a couple of Proto2K E6s into E5 A-B sets.   One problem I haven't solved yet with my research into this project are the roof grills.   Two types were used on the E5s, and A and B units sometimes had different types.   The Proto 2K E6 models have the roof grill vents parallel to the unit body.   Some photos show the roof grill vents mounted crosswise, perpendicular to the body axis.   In BB10, the photo of 9911 A-B on the Exposition Flyer appear to have the two types of roof grills on these units.   The B units were only bought in 1940 for the original sets.   What were the roof grills like on these original B units?   Were they identical to the A units or different?   Could someone direct me to overhead photos of these original E5 A-B sets?

A pesky issue converting the Hallmark E5s to new power is conserving the matching distinctive plated fluted skirting soldered to the OEM brass flooring,  an issue that prevented from doing much earlier conversions on this growler and its consort.  By using the original flooring for the A, I dodged the issue, but I could not on the B where I used the  substitute cast zamac floor. Presuming that unsoldering the skirts would probably destroy the plating (to be remedied somewhat with Alclad), but having no alternative, I successfully removed the skirts with a hot iron and a lot of heat sinks- with all plating remaining….intact!  The skirts were then reapplied to the OMI floor.

I LOL at the report of  a new-in-box OMI  E unit OMI zamac floor being found in three pieces.  Feel good; that was one of the better ones!

I love these E5’s. For years, I stood trackside countless times to watch these locomotives westbound rise up through the Berwyn gantries to hurtle through Riverside with the Expo Flyer at full track speed, attempting to match the  Milwaukee’s  new Midwest Hiawatha’s mid day dash to Omaha.  The only thing better was when the Expo had double-shotted 4-6-4s instead (only once did I see that, but it was worth a hundred other sightings).
