A couple of other things is that single bulbs of that wattage required no oil, including fingertip oil be on the glass. I have changed several on steam and old diesel locos. The sealed beams do not care.

Second is if one of the sealed beams burns out en route, you still have a backup.

There was just a thread on the subject on another list….the transition was impacted by the declining availability of incandescent bulbs, superior life and brilliance of the twin sealed beam replacements, and availability of retrofit kits to convert from the single bulbs.   Inventory rationalization also played a role.

I doubt there was anything beyond casual connection between painting and retrofitting on the Q other than the unit being out of service for shopping.

Charlie, I perhaps should have been more clear. My question was about the conversion of the upper and the lower lights from single lamp to dual lamp in both positions. The change seems to coincide with the black to red conversion, but they may just be coincidence

Huh?

If you have photos of CB&Q E Units without headlights in the nose door I sure would like to see them!!!

The only E units that ran on the Q that did not have them from the factory were 1) the EMC E2 demonstrator that ran on the East End and ended up on the KCS as an E3?? 2) the E5B units.

While the EMC styling art for the E5 with painted shovelnose windows instead of stripes did not have nose headlight, all the builders photos I???ve seen of E5As do.??

If you are talking about the conversion of headlights and MARS lights to dual sealed beam bulbs from single incandescent bulbs that is another discussion yet to be researched for both E and F Units!!

??

I'm curious if there was a particular event or time that triggered the conversion of the E5s to having dual headlights??? I've reviewed the E5 Bulletin, and find no information on this. I've wondered if the units were converted when they went from black to red markings. In the bulletin, and I've not recently reviewed any other sources for this idea, all of the photos of units that have black stripes are single lights, the red units are dual. That's true in all of the color shots, and in the black and white one where the color can be deduced that holds true as well. The only exception is the 9911. It's safe to say it kept it's dual lighting when it was painted in to the black scheme at IRM.

One logical reason for the conversion might be to get a more uniform appearance relative to the E7s and E8s. However I wonder if something like an ICC regulation might have made it necessary to make the conversion. Maybe it became necessary to add emergency lighting, or CBQ chose to do it and felt adding the dual lighting was a convenient thing to do? It might have been a technology improvement that gave stronger/better lighting. In any case, it would seem to coincide with or at least near the red conversion.

Thx for any thoughts, information
