Mike:
I missed your response until after I had already posted mine; we both said pretty much the same thing; there must have been something about GN's P-2s that the Q thought it might want on its B-1-As.

Interesting to speculate on the reasoning behind the Q testing a GN loco. GN 2527 was the last of the P-2 class Mountains they received from Baldwin in 1923. The Q had already received their
B-1 class Mountains (7000-7007) from Lima in 1922. The Q and GN locos are within an inch or two and a few thousand pounds here and there of being almost identical in their principle specifications. Was there some new feature on the GN P-2 that the Q wanted
to check out? In any case, the Q subsequently ordered B-1As 7008-7020 from Baldwin in 1925, which were copies of the earlier Lima B-1s, but with slightly different tenders.

Pete - Could one be a RFE? A foreign line locomotive, especially one being being tested, would almost certainly have a RFE riding along with the assigned crew. Best

Great great photo..As usual I'm taken up with the details. At first I thought that we had Engineer and fireman...with fireman dirtiest overalls yet shiniest shoes..Yet after a more scrutinizing look and checking the
location ie Savannah...crew change point. I've decided that we have both the inbound and the outbound engineer. Look at those very shiny shoes and the overall cuffs turned up and, most certainly sewn in that position. After a fireman became an engineer he
would tend to "pork out" a bit , hence he had to purchase his overalls in a somewhat larger size with which came longer legs hense the wide expanse of the lighter color of the inside denim on the legs.
I did though notice in my "braking days" that most of the enginemen and some of the conductors tended to keep their shoes shined up nicely.

Tom - There were GN "visitors" to the Q well prior to the F-unit leases in the late 1960s. I've attached an undated image showing GN 4-8-2 No. 2527 testing over the LaCrosse Division at Savanna, IL. I've often wondered "why" the three Hill Roads, the
NP, GN and Q, all went there own separate ways with steam motive power development instead of working together to design standardized locomotives suitable for use on all three lines. Best Regards - Louis

GN F's were regular power on trains 97 and 88 in the early 60's.
Karl,
The early 60's GN F-unit leases are pretty well documented, but ended before my modeling period which is 1965-merger (but skews toward the late 1960's). That is what was so exciting about seeing the GN A-B-A set in 1968. There is a photo of a GN F unit being
traded in to EMD in a locomotive consist at the Daytons Bluff engine facility, but it is unclear of whether it would be the lead or trailing unit. It's not on a train. I had assumed the A-B-A set was also trade-in fodder, but confirming the 454D number on
the lead unit confirms that this wasn't the case since it didn't go to EMD until 1970. Really cool to see the consist.
While I am sure more GN equipment ran the Q in the late 1960's, so far I can only photographically confirm two instances: This F7A-B-A set, and a shot on RR Picture Archives of a freight at Savanna in 1968 where the trailing unit is a GN U28B: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2819786
If anyone has any other photos they know of I'd like to see them.
