Ed,
Get John Strauss Jr. Volume 2 and 3 Burlington Route Passenger
Trains. You will find many many photos of trains starting in the
mid-1950s with E units running elephant style. There also are some
photos of units back to back. You can also look at Larry Sallee's
      online photo collection at
<https://get.google.com/albumarchive/111371098753160118549/album/AF1QipOpXyNE7W-3jaeFcdke3hgJ_dNJLgjI8EvIVRJu?source=pwa>.
All Q passenger trains but one have the E units running elephant
      style.
Since this seems to be a keen interest of yours, perhaps you
should consider make a trip to the Newberry Library to look
through the management archives to find the paperwork on why this
was usual practice from the mid-1950s on. An article for the
Zephyr or the Bulletin about this paperwork I am sure would be of
      interest to the many readers.

      Walter,

I'd like to see that evidence.  Of course, there's a
difference between it happening occasionally and happening
        regularly, perhaps by policy.

Thanks for the story.  One has to work with what one gets.
