I really like discussion...just for the sake of "discussion"...up to a point.  I have learned...and sometimes have done it myself...Just throw out something controversial just to see what happens.  I think that some of the time only "some" of the people have any detailed interest in a subject...I am among those sometime, but just like to hear it talked about and see what others have to say...I'm not a researcher and never have been or never intend to be..Maybe that's why my "grade point average" at UNL is not as good as it could have been.  Probably just because of laziness.

If I like something or it "piques" ..how do you like that for a word...my interest I'll "declaim" on the subject...The elephant style running thing is not as complicated as some might think...I think it's basically a matter of Economics...on the railroad  "cheaper" is usually better in the eye of managment...The cost savings of not having to turn an engine is a "big deal"  laborwise as well as timewise.  The Q did have a unique and innovative arrangement whereby their E units ran in a cycle around the railroad and then as part of the cycle took a turn or two in Suburban service.  When the "push pull" idea came along it was a "REALLY BIG DEAL"...tremendous amount of time and money was saved "immediately" with that concept.  Think about it..When the straight "pull method" was used and engine would come in..Then the train would be backed out of the depot to the coach yard..then the engine would go to the  "Zephyr Pit" on the Q or the "Rocket House" on the Rock Island..then turned and fueled and "massaged" before it could be used again.

With push-pull...it was right in and right back out..Oh I forgot above there had to be a "hostler" and a "backup man" to get the trains in and out of the depot...Big Time savings as well as time is the answer to most "discussion questions" railroadwise.

Bill,

This subject isn't as keen an interest to me as you think.  I got interested because it's, well, interesting.  So I did a search on this group and turned up this very discussion, from a year or two ago.  As I read the posts, some ideas surfaced in my head, and I thought I'd contribute.  Because the subject is interesting.  And, since I thus entered the "conversation", I started conversing.

I will note that I, unintentionally, seemed to have shaken some more data and observations and ideas out of the tree.

I currently have a number of research projects going (none Q related, though) and am not in a position to pick up more.  I do agree that it would be a terrific subject for an article.
