I guess that made the Q rather unusual and adds to the mystique.

All,  the Q ran their E units elephant style on their passenger trains to minimize time lost in case of an en route failure of the lead unit.  Also, the roundhouse would not put "any" unit, or units, on a train, as there were specific units assigned to specific trains.  All of this was / has been covered in CBQHS bulletins of at least 15 years ago.
