The E8s and E9s were rotated thru long distance and commuter services.  So most of these would be westward facing.  That may account for Elephant Es, particularly on westbound trains

If, at the ends of their long distance runs, the locomotive sets were turned as a group, with or without their trains, they would also come back as similar elephant style sets.

But then that means every E that came back from a long distance run would have to be physically turned.  Is that what happened every day in Chicago?

If all that's so, I can definitely see the elephant style for long distance runs being derived from some need to have the E's westward aligned in Chicago.
