I'm not sure if MAIN is an acronym, but I believe these were troop trains based on some comments in Wayner's "Passenger Train Consists of the 1940s."

My guess is that these were MAIN trains...MAIN trains were certainly not low priority trains which I would assume that you implied by your "got stuck in the hole" comment....BTW...I wonder how many know what MAIN stands for???

Copied verbatim is an order that no 48,no 44 ,first and second 50 received at Savanna,IL on 12/17/42. These are all passenger trains and only 48 stops at only Polo and Oregon. The others make no stops.
Really wonder what extras 5620 and 5617 west were..... See below

If a "main" train I thought they got stuck in the "hole" all the time
