All,
I do not know what the word for main was, but have very great memories of a troop train in 1965 from El Paso, Tx to Salinas, CA.  A steam engine and old heavyweight cars.  Was going from Basic to Advance Individual Traning (Infantry) at Ft. Ord, CA.  I was not a railfan or a modeler at the time but knew that the steam locomotive was coming to an end.  Long trip, but fond memories.

MAIN is, indeed, an acronym...I'm not sure whether, or if, it would apply to other means of transporting military men and "impedimentia" (how about that word you military guys)...but MAIN  was the acronym for  Military Authorization Identification Number.
