Gordon, Nikon still repairs the 5000 and 9000 series film scanners. Only repair for the 4000 series scanners has been discontinued. If you have 40k slides to scan, the investment is worth every dime. A 5000 ED with auto load will do the job very nicely. 40K scans will not wear out the scanner. You can buy a good used one, send it in to Nikon for a tune up, scan slides and get basically what you paid for it on resale even if you have to send it in for a tune up before sale. The 9000 ED does not have an auto loader but does have a tray for maybe 4-5 slides that can batch scan. But I advise not to buy a used auto loader. They are susceptible to issues that tend to evolve from owners tweaking them. Sort different brands of slides separately for scanning. It reduces jamming immensely. Same for bent slides. The Nikon scanners have a Dmax in excess of 4.2 which is necessary for popping up the shadows. They are excellent machines. I've been watching scanners on ebay and the prices are astronomical ! g > !! ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
