First you have to define motor car. One would be passenger carrying used in
scheduled service the other would be used for MOW service. Early MOW cars were
the pump type and at an early date motors were built to attach to them to speed
and save labor in getting the MOW men over the road for inspection and
maintenance. They were often sold as kits.
In an effort to combat the growing electric interurban invasion into the local
passenger business many steam roads experimented with early motor cars. The
Alton Railroad, Rock Island and CB&Q all used early cars to combat the
interurban in Illinois. The interurban would at first stop at any flag stop or
even farmer's lane while the use of Steam and full crews with a number of
passenger cars (even on locals) was too expensive for the steam roads.
Electric
power was cheaper and only had a 2 man crew later even a single operator. Some
roads like the Chicago Aurora and Dekalb(west off the Geneva Branch at
Aurora)used early four wheeled battery cars until they made enough money(?) to
electrify.
"History of Mack Rail Motor Cars and Locomotives" lists
Model AC CB&Q #501 bn 60009 built 4/29/22 with McGuire-Cummings body built
for
North Dakota service leased to Rapid City, Black Hills & Western
1928 scrapped June 1934
Model AQ CB&Q #569 bn 161002 built 11/10/28 with Pullman body for service in
Illinois rn# 9569, 9850 wrecked 4/27/43 and scrapped (Builder photo on P.
48)
Locomotive model 30 ton bn 172001 built as Mack Demo Unit the to CB&Q #100
rn 8900 and 9100 built 3/20/29 used at Galesburg Tie Plant until
scrapped 6/13/52 (photo as 100 P. as Demo unit and at Galesburg)
"Interurbans without Wires" by Edmund Keilty shows Edwards built #500 in
1922,
502-508 in 24-26 and with Porter #552 in 1925. EMC did not get started till
1924 with the Q finally getting cars from this builder in 1927 which of course
lead to 9900.
This would lead me to believe the 1905 cars were for MOW

Subject: [CBQ] Gasoline motor car 1905
I found the following piece in a 1905 magazine -
A new gasoline motor car was tried not long ago on the C., B. & Q. and proved
to
be a complete success.
It has rendered excellent service on one of the smaller branch lines in
passenger and mail service.
Was this the first (railway) motor car as opposed to a road vehicle with
flanged
wheels?
Anyone able to shed any light on this?
