You are a 100% right Dave.  Even more so today, many 'stations' shown on ETT's 
are only place names for the benefit of Operating & Engineering employees so 
they know where a passing siding, change in Train control, crossover, etc is 
located ("Murphy" named after the famous CB&Q President, is a location shown on 
BN ETT's just south (East by TT) of East Cabin (E. Dbq, IL) and never hosted a 
depot.  And of course the old station names still show along tracks even when a 
depot is long gone, again for the benefit of crews as to where meets would be 
made, TT authority, etc.

 

Even "in the day" i.e. when nearly all freight & passenger traffic of more than 
a few miles was by train, the Station List in a public TT would usually mean a 
depot but could be something as inconsequential as a 'flag stop', platform or 
shelter of some kind albeit not necessarily a full depot.  Amtrak has had 
several 'stops' that lacked a depot.

 

"Granger Country" has a photo or two of early CB&Q "stations" that certainly 
did not have depots!

May I make an observation?  In railfan circles we often use the terms ?station? 
and  ?depot? interchangeably, usually assuming that a station on the railroad 
is/was a physical depot building ? as in police station or filling station.  
However, when you take a look at the broader definition of the word station 
from The Free Dictionary online you find:

sta·tion (stshn)  n.
1. 
  a. A place or position where a person or thing stands or is assigned to 
stand; a post: a sentry station.
  b. An area where a person is assigned to work.
2. The place, building, or establishment from which a service is provided or 
operations are directed: a police station.
3. A stopping place along a route, especially a stop for refueling or for 
taking on passengers; a depot.
4. Social position; rank: 
5. An establishment equipped for observation and study: a radar station.
6. 
  a. An establishment equipped for radio or television transmission.
  b. One that broadcasts radio or television transmissions: the views in this 
program do not necessarily reflect those of the station.
  c. A frequency assigned to a broadcaster.
7. An input or output point along a communications system.
8. A precise point from which measurements in surveying are made.
9. Ecology 
  a. The normal habitat of a particular plant or animal community.
  b. The exact place of occurrence of a species or individual within a given 
habitat.
10. Station Roman Catholic Church Any of the 14 Stations of the Cross.

Based upon that definition, I think that we need to understand that a station 
along the railroad may or may not have had a physical building, it may have 
only been a location, as in the case of Carthage Jct. AKA Illinois Jct. 

By the way, my 1949 Burlington Route Map of the West (the huge wall map that 
could be bought for $2 back in the day) shows that Carthage Jct. is indeed at 
the east end of the Burlington, IA Mississippi bridge and is one in the same as 
Illinois Jct.

Illinois Jct was at the east end of the Mississippi Bridge at Burlington
the Jct switch to go south from the East-West Ottumwa Mainline from Galesburg 
to 
Ottumwa 

The interlocking rods were operated from Wood Tower(rods in photo on P. 50 of 
Bull. 23)((P 76 same Bull.))

When Burlington was CTCed the Jct Switch was on the CTC and when we rebuilt the 
CTC machine after it was moved to Galesburg(moved from present depot) I got the 
parts off the front of the machine.
Will bring to Geneva IF I can find them

After doing some searching on Google for "Carthage Junction, IL" (with and 
without the quotes), it looks like that Carthage Jct, IL 

was another name for Illinois Jct, the place that the Carthage line came off of 
the CB&Q across the river from Burlington, IA.

Here the Chicago, Burlington A Quincy Railroad connects with its Carthage A
