Bill-
Great summary....
A couple of comments...
I had heard that the Open Platform Steel commuter cars were built the way they
were because the Q had started a program of putting steel underframes and
stretching the existing older wood commuter coaches. An exec was looking into
the program and noted that the cost of doing the stretch job with the new
underframes was not much different than building new steel bodies. So the
program was stopped (some of the cars had been completed and did eventually get
steel plating and ran up until the modernization program) and new cars were
built on the underframes already on hand to the same dimensions as the
stretched wood cars.
There were three kinds of power cars.... six cars 7200-7205 were generator
coaches rebuilt from four wheen trucked PA-15 steel open platform commuter
coaches. There were also two 7300-7301 baggage/coach generator cars and twelve
7302-7313 coach generator cars rebuilt from mainline 6100 series coaches riding
on six wheel trucks. The 7300s were rebuilt in a manner similar to the
mainline "Simulated Stainless" betterment cars with thermopane windows and full
length shrouded roofs. All the upgraded suburban equipment received roller
bearings. The 7300s got simulated stainless paint and were always silver. A
few PC6 and PB20 mainline cars were modified with more seating for suburban
service with the Forest Green body, Yellow Striping and Lettering, Aluminum
Roof and Black Underbody paint scheme.
