The Q also bought the extra CZ cars so they could interline them with the Ak
Sar Ben Zephyr, since they otherwise had overnight and next morning down time
in Chicago.
It is interesting that the 5 consist North Coast Limited could be protect by
4 NP slumbercoaches via interlining the slumbercoach with the Denver Zephyr.
That slumbercoach, during summer months, did not have much downtime between
1959, when they were purchased until 1964, when the NP acquired 8 additional
second hand slumbercoaches, of which 1 went to the NCL, 5 to the Mainstreeter,
and two to the @ for the American Royal Zephyr.

Check the date on the train sheet - it might well be after the end of
Transcon service. In any case, remember that CZ cars had a window
in Chicago where the sleepers and some of the other cars could go out
and back between trains. In fact, there was provision for that in
the updated contract of the consortium - which is why the CB&Q paid
for more cars in the 1952 purchase than it's weighted portion. As
I said, the NYC leased cars from all three major partners, not just
the WP or the D&RGW.
