I believe that 7 cars could have protected the thru sleeper.

  Lv.New York - Late Afternoon, Day 1
  Ar.Chicago - Morning, Day 2
  Lv.Chicago - Afternoon, Day 2
  Ar.Denver - Morning, Day 3
  Ar.Salt Lake - Late Night, Day 3
  Ar.Oroville - Morning Day 4
  Ar.Oakland - Afternoon Day 4
  Lv.Oakland - Morning Day 5
  Ar.Oroville - Afternoon Day 5
  Ar.Salt Lake - Morning Day 6
  Ar.Denver - Evening Day 6
  Ar.Chicago - Afternoon Day 7
  Lv.Chicago - Evening Day 7
Ar.New York - Early Afternoon Day 8 (Which would also be day 1 for the car
since it would be leaving later that afternoon to head west again.

Thus 7 cars could protect the car line, although servicing in New York would
be tight.

For its regular transcon service with the CZ, New York Central leased one of
the D&RGW CZ cars, unlike the Pennsylvania, which owned its own. This,
according to Karl Zimmerman.
Remember the NYC-SF 10-6 was a daily service. I would think the cycle of one
10-6, NYC back to NYC would take at least 8 days if not 9 days. With Silver
Rapids and the leased D&RGW 10-6 other foreign 10-6 Pullmans would have been
normal in the pool operation. In this pool operation Pullman didn't sold space
in
a 10-6. Thus a passenger could have a double bedroom in the through Pullman
and Silver Rapids could be in the CZ consist that trip and the passenger may
not have been riding in Silver Rapids.

The BRHS put out some train sheets showing the consist and here's Silver
Rapids running overnight on the American Royal Zephyr. Which ment PRR owned
Silver
Rapids wasn't at that time in the through Pullman pool.

In Portrait of a Silver Lady there's a photo of a two tone gray NYC Pullman.
I would suspect that just about any 10-6 Pullman would have shown up in the CZ
consist. In his Q color books Mike Spoor has made it a point to show as many
foreign Pullmans in the CZ.
