I just got a copy of BB # 35 out (becuase I had it
handy). On page 68 is a picture of a waycar in 1917
with the long end forward. On page 85 there is picture
of the southbound "third turn", that shows the
practice of having the long end of the way car on the
north end of the train out of Centralia, so the load
train will have the long end "againist the loads". It
did always work out. Either way, in the summer, you
ate a lot of "bug dust" coal on these runs. The
Metropolis local went south long end forward and
returned short end forward, because they handled
Chiles coal(mostly dust) going south, on a lot of days
after 1956, and also Joppa coal interchanged at
Goreville. I also found (not in BB #35) a picture of a
work train in 1918 with the cupola forward, so go
figure!
