There are several ways to view and research the Sanborn Fire Insurance maps:

1. The Library of Congress has a nearly complete collection. They have been in the process of the last several years of scanning what is in their collection.

This link will get you what is currently online for Illinois:

<https://www.loc.gov/collections/sanborn-maps/?fa=location:illinois&sp=1>

Most of what they have online is from the 1920s and earlier. Approximately 2/3s of their Illinois collection has been scanned and is available online. You can go to the Library of Congress and make arrangements to view what you are interested in if it is not online. However for almost all smaller towns, Sanborn updates stopped from sometime in the late 1920s to the early 1940s.

2. The largest university in the state (in this case Illinois) often has a complete collection of Sanborn maps that usually require university access or a visit to the university library.

3. Large city libraries often have collections of Sanborn maps for their city. For example, the Kansas City Public Library has an extensive collection of Sanborn maps for Kansas City proper. The access is similar to what university policies are.

4. There are public library systems that subscribe to Sanborn's successor that allows electronic access to the maps. Some subscribe only to maps that are in the state they are located in. Some pay extra to allow access to the entire country. This is the close to the entire Sanborn collection that has been scanned. There are maps for some locations that have been updated in the early 1960s. Sanborn's successor sells these maps for historical research, environmental remediation, etc.  If your library system has an emphasis on Genealogy it is likely to have full electronic access to the Sanborn maps.

James,

Where did you find the Sanborn maps for Mt. Morris? Are they online?
