Thanks for the stock yard list.  It brought back memories of a long time ago.  Grant county with about 650 residents in the Sandhills of western Nebraska is one of the least populated in the country.  But it has advertised itself as the "Best cow Country in the U.S.".  In 1956 or 1957 at age 13 or 14 I watched several cars of feeder cattle being loaded at Whitman for my grandparents farms in northwest Illinois where I grew up.  The three tiny towns in Grant County - Whitman, Hyannis, and Ashby have a lot of pens on that list and these three have been described as loading the most cattle of any initial loading point on the CB&Q in the late 40s or 50s.
