Grain doors were used inside of the out side door.  This consisted of a wood plank combination nailed to the door posts inside up to near the top of the door.   The receiving grain elevator would have to tip or scoop out the grain and the doors were an asset so had to be removed cleaned and sent back.  Loads in doors loads out grain.   In later years brown paper grain doors were use which were heavy brown paper or cardboard reenforced with steel bands again nailed to the door posts.  This was an expendable and torn often left to flap in the wind with the steel band a real hazard.
I do have a box car with grain doors you can see from the outside but for modeling just close the doors and say it is a load of grain no one will be the wiser

Before the use of covered hoppers to haul grain, the CB&Q and other railroads used boxcars.  I want to modify a couple of my S scale boxcars for this purpose. Can someone tell me what was used inside the sliding doors to hold the grain in?  How were the boxcars emptied?  Any details or references would be most helpful.  Thank you.
