Yes indeed..."OCCASIONALLY"  somebody would file a claim....When I was Manager Freight Claims at the Rock Island we had a separate department consisting of a supervisor and 4 Claim Investigators who handled NOTHING BUT GRAIN CLAIMS....They came in by the bale...

Most grain companies including the rurral CO OPs had one or more persons who did nothing more than file claims...

When the covered hopper came along all the railroad Claim Agents with approval of management got together...A TRUE MIRACLE   and in direct violation of the Elkins Act barring "collusion" and agreed that we would not pay any claims for loss for "Clear Record" covered hoppers...In claim "parlance" a clear record car was one which bore no evidence of leakage.  Of course when the claims came in we had a "standard" declination letter with certainly no mention of any "cooperation" between carriers on this matter.  There were some lawsuits, but, to the best of my knowledge from the time I left the Claim Department in 1972 no body had "CAVED"

At the risk of any further "rants" on this subject become boring and uninteresting to this group that's all I'll say now...If anybody has questions I'll be glad to "declaim" forther on the matter.

Pete

Did any one calculate the load shrinkage from leaking cars. I am sure that somewhere along the line some one would file a claim for lost grain.
