Scott,
ESU has a non-sound 21 pin decoder. All of the factory equipped DCC
no sound locomotives from manufacturers like Bowser, Fox Valley
Models and Intermountain are using it.
Do not be tempted to buy the Soundtraxx Econami EP-21. Though it is
a 21 pin decoder, it is not totally compatible with the boards in
locomotives that have 21 pin connectors. A friend of mine and myself
learned this the hard way.

Only thing is, I'm not interested in sound decoders, just
"regular" decoders, hence my mention of Digitrax & NCE ( I
should have also included TCS). One can always "hardwire" the
decoder, but I was hoping the Rivarossi models would be
compatible with any make decoder, sound or otherwise. Are you
saying the later versions of the U25C (and the U28C) models
don't have the 8 pin socket? I suspect these Rivarossi models
are too new for the decoder manufacturers to suggest a decoder
on their websites yet, which is why I was asking what others
who installed their own decoders have used.
