Only thing is, I'm not interested in sound decoders, just "regular" decoders, hence my mention of Digitrax & NCE ( I should have also included TCS).  One can always "hardwire" the decoder, but I was hoping the Rivarossi models would be compatible with any make decoder, sound or otherwise.  Are you saying the later versions of the U25C (and the U28C) models don't have the 8 pin socket?  I suspect these Rivarossi models are too new for the decoder manufacturers to suggest a decoder on their websites yet, which is why I was asking what others who installed their own decoders have used.

Scott,

As for decoders, only one I know for sure is the LokSound Select 21 pin decoder for both the U25C and U28C. The earlier run of the U25Cs had a 21 pin socket and an 8 pin socket with dummy plugs in the DCC Ready version- using an 8 pin decoder got you just the basic light functions - not all the warning lights.   Neither Digitrax nor NCE web sites show a 21-pin decoder, nor do they show a suggested decoder for the Rivarossi U-boats.  IMHO, if you are buying one of these, spend the extra $ and get it with the decoder installed.  The LokSound decoders are excellent, high-quality units.

Thanks for checking on this, Dave.  Also, my thanks to the feedback from everyone else.  As was suggested, I went back and looked at the Hornby website again, and see there are separate photos for both #563 and #571, as Dave attached.  And yes, I was thinking of the trucks used on some the later U28Cs as mentioned in The Second Diesel Spotter's Guide and also on the Diesel Detailer Forum website.  I had misinterpreted this information to suggest that these other trucks were used on the CB&Q units.  As I look at the various CB&Q U28C photos that I have, I see none of these are the  Adirondack or GSC trucks.

Another question for all.  For the models purchased without the factory installed DCC sound decoder, which Digitrax or NCE decoder do you suggest using with this model (or the U25C, for that matter)?
