Hol - Behind 5609 sat two Class M-4-A 2-10-4 type locomotives. Shown in the
attached image is the 6319. The Corbin book states it was sold for scrap in May
1961. So, it too had dodged the torch for a couple of years longer. I very
vaguely recall that Dad and I were told that both M-4-A's had "good boilers" and
been held for possible use as stationary boilers at NWS&W, but were no
longer needed so would be scrapped, too. NWS&W had also earlier taken
two other M-4-A's, cut off all their rods, pony and trailing trucks
turning them into monster 0-10-0's, then shoved them through
tight curves around to the back of the steel mill
facing the river front where both were used for a number of years as
stationary boilers feeding steam to the steel mill. They would've been the last
M-4-A's to "steam." Images of them will follow in a day or so. Best Regards -
