As the sesond installment, let's look a the Q's switcher numbering sysem:

Low horsepower 6-cylinder EMD locomotives were in the 9100 series:

9130-9135 EMC SW
9136-9153 EMD SW1

12-cylinder EMD locomotives of 1,000 to 1,200 horsepower were in the 9200
series:

9200-9201 EMC NW1
9203-9248 EMD NW2
9249-9268 EMD SW7
9269-9270 EMD SW9
9271-9292 EMD SW1200

The non-EMD 1,000hp switchers that came in during WWII were put in the 9300
series:

9300-9308 Alco S-2
9350-9379 Baldwin VO-1000

The EMD Transfer units (TR2A/TR2B) that were actually cow-calf NW2's and later
had he calf's converted to cab units were in the 9400 series:

9400A-9413B EMD TR2A/B

Here were where we get some geat insight into how the Q planned on switcher
numbering. Clearly there was a huge number series, 9500-9899, sitting above the
TR2's and below the passenger units. But what did they do when they bought
their last switchers, 12 EMD SW1000's? They numbered them 9310-9321, right
above the S-2's! So apparently the Q had decided that they were not going to
set up an entire new 9500 series for the next generation of switchers (2nd
generation 645 powered EMD's). The VO1000's were gone by the BN era, so the Q
had another 78 numbers open in the 9322-9399. I would put any further SW1000
purchases there.

What about 1500hp locomotives, like SW1500's, MP15's, and MP15AC's? They could
also go in the 9300 series, although all locomotives in the 9300's - Alco,
Baldwin, and EMD were 1,000hp. So that might be a case where I create a new
9500 series for 1,500hp switchers. That would make things easy for crews to
remember - the 9500's are the newest, most powerful switchers on the Q!
