Leo and all,

I never had to have job insurance as a clerk/crew caller, but I ‘heard’ about folks taking their job insurance payment and going fishing/hunting/house painting, etc. when given a short ‘vacation.’

The fund was, as I understand it, good about paying claims.

However, there were exceptions.  In June 1962, an NP passenger train engineer and fireman were accused of being intoxicated on duty, leading to the wreck of the North Coast Limited west of Missoula, Montana, killing one and injuring 200.  They were fired and they had to sue their insurance to get paid.  The insurance basically told them to go pound sand.  I don’t find the article right now, and I don’t recall whether they ever got paid or not.  They didn’t ever go back to work, unlike most employees who get time off.
