In the BN days while I was Local Chairman for the UTU-E at
Edgemont. Had a case of an engineer who in broad daylight,
ran into his train with a single GP40 and displaced the V-16
six inches off the mounts and into the main alternator.

During the investigation the Road Foreman estimated his speed
to have been 14 mph. The engineer stood up and stated he was
going much faster than that, he estimated at least 27 mph.

He didn't collect on his"Fire Insurance" either.

It is very easy to get discipline time off or be dismissed from service. It is just the way the railroad works. A lot of insurance was only good for once a year. We use to like to give them 5 or 10 days. They would have second thoughts about turning it in. I have even had guys ask for 60 days on an offense so they could draw and be off longer. They got paid anyway so why not.
