Everytime I arrived at Chicago Union Station on a Burlington train, it always came in locomotive first.

In June of 1966, our 20 car DZ came in 3 hours late from Denver, due to mechanical problems by Yuma, CO.  Thus the run through track was not available to us.  Accordingly, the cars behind SC7, the slumbercoach I was riding, were uncoupled and brought in on an adjacent track.  But the remainder of the train still went in loco first.

Art,

Are you saying that the Q would turn the train before they let the people off at CUS?

Over the course of the years before Amtrak I saw both approaches utilized: most of the time it was locomotives first, especially if the train was running late.

Earl,

In arriving, they would come in engine first.  After all had exited, the switchers would pull the cars, turn and wash them, then take them to the 14th steet coachyard. for cleaning, etc.  When the train would be placed in CUS for loading, it would be backed in, either by switcher, or by road power, depending on express/RPO requirements.  CUS was a stub ended station except for two tracks that were used to get over to the North side (mostly used by the PRR.)

Does anyone know if the Builder and the NCL back into CUS or locomotives first? I ask this because I have seen railfan videos taken over Roosevelt St.of trains reversing or going locomotive first then coming out the opposite.

As the NP/GN had the Q in their pocket for about a decade at that point, why the _NCL_ was going over the North Western is a bit confusing. Does anyone know what date the _NCL_ shifted over to the Q?
