John,

What oil company brand did this dealer carry ? The bulk dealer in Plano was a DX distributor. The company still exists but is now located NE of town next to the Menards distribution center. It used to be on the west end of town on the south side of the mainlines next to the stock yard( I have to be getting old to remember all this stuff).

Here's a little side story about the Somonauk site. There was also a coal distributor there on the south side(may have been the same company as the fuel oil one). In the mid 70's we were spotting some cars at the elevator/lumber yard and stayed in the clear for awhile for traffic. So I went wandering around. Found a nice little honey suckle bush growing in one of the old coal bins.A couple days later we were back in Somonauk picking up the cars we had previously delivered.I had my shovel and a spike bucket along.

Went to the coal bin and dug that bush up and planted it in the corner of the back yard at my first house in Aurora. Went by there recently and that bush is doing just fine about 37 years later.

By the way it is next to the barn that your dad and I used as a model to build the one in your childhood homes back yard.

Leo Phillipp

Thanks Leo,

That's pretty interesting. A friend's grandfather used to run the business located in Somonauk. The warehouse, transfer pump, and the concrete supports for the tanks are all still there. I acquired an old sign off the building this past weekend and it sparked my curiosity.

John,

That was a bulk oil dealer. Most likely products were gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, kerosene, etc. It was these types of bulk dealer/distributors that often received multi-compartment tank cars so they could receive from two to five different products in one car. At one time there were many, many hundreds and bulk dealers and thousands of multi compartment cars. Pretty much gone by the late 50s. Standard Oil had a pipeline terminal at Rochelle and from there UTLX tank car were distributed all over the Midwest.

I was told by one old timer of a car moving from Rochelle to the dealer in Shabbona back in the day.

Would anyone know what type of  fuel that the Q would deliver to Somonauk? There used to be large tanks that sat on concrete supports and there is an old transfer pump in a shack. It sits on the south side of the ROW.

Thanks,
John Shoener
