Before 1947 or 1948, the Pullman Company owned the sleeping cars that operated on the Burlington and while it is true that some cars were built for and/or were assigned to certain Burlington trains, the Pullman Company retained ownership. There were a couple of exceptions, like the sleepers on the first Denver Zephyr. There the Q owned the cars and leased them to Pullman for their operation. After that time, the Federal goverment forced Pullman to sell the sleeping cars to the railroads, who in turn leased them back to Pullman for operation. Pullman operated the cars (staffed them, supplied them, and maintained them) and charged the railroads. Pullman received the "space charges" and the railroad received the first class fares.
From: Rupert & Maureen <gamlenz@ihug.co.nz> To: CBQ List <CBQ@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Sunday, February 12, 2012 3:05 AM Subject: [CBQ] Pullman and sleeping cars My query is about the relationship between Pullman and the Burlington in the operation of passenger equipment in general and, in particular, the ownership of the sleeping cars that were "used" on the Burlington.
I have seen many references of cars being built for the Burlington, suggesting that ownership was being transferred whilst other references suggest that the cars were only assigned, but I cannot recollect any article outlining the business relationship. Was it a mixed ownership situation or did it depend on the era? Thanks Rupert Gamlen Auckland NZ. __._,_.___
