AMTRAK today has strict rules for the handleing of human remains both for
the funeral home and railroad employees. The rough box is the same for rail
or air. It is a heavy plywood and 1x3 tray and a triple wall corg. fiberboard
cover held together with cloth banding. Shipping permit is in a sealed poly
pouch at the head end of container. Only item allowed on top is an accompning
box of flowers( like a box of roses-4x4x24). Nothing else is ever placed on
top of rough box of remaines. Maximum respect must be shown for the deceased,
the family is usually nearby At small stations the funeral home employee is
to expocted assist the loading and unloading. Sometines the casket is inside
the rough box and they can get heavy for 2 or 3 people to handle. The rough
box is usually white in color now. The cover is actually a inner and outer
box itself. Most stations handle a remains every few months, large
stations it is once or twice a month or more. If you are really interested
ask any funural home to see one. It would make an interesting ,model to have
on baggage cart at a station. Flags are usually locally obtained or properly
folded inside the container. They are not placed over the outside of the
rough box.. Hope this answers most of the questions. . .
