Leo,
I sure the smell was tough to take! Was it a Swift even back in 1950?
Rapido is coming out with the General America 37' meat reefers, an the Swift
car is one of the cars they will produce.
Just to be sure - the plant was west of the station - correct?
Thanks for the great information!

Rich,
The Rochelle plant was a Swift & Co. plant. It handled prinarily hogs but
also beef. In the earliest days the stock arrived via rail on stock #1 and
#2. Outbound product was dressed and packaged meats. In the early days the
mtys were iced on the "ice Track" next to the mains and then spotted for
loading. Other outbound products were dried blood, bone
meal,hides,urea,edible
and inedible tallow. Just thinking about it brings back the smells.
I will never forget those smells, the fat in the air and the cries of the
animals when the "sledge" missed. If you have ever had the flu and had
troub
le keeping your stomach under control then you have a small idea of what
it
was like to switch this plant on a humid night.
